The DCEU is still going forward, though the name is and had never been official, like the MCU, we will use that just to make things easier. Anyways, the DCEU is going forward as planned and after some bumps the DCEU is planning multiverse. Walter Hamada, DC Films head, confirmed this with a New York Times piece, stating that the some characters like Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman “will continue their adventures on Earth 1, while new incarnations,” Like Robert Pattinson’s new Batman, “will populate Earth 2.” While the long awaited Ezra Miller film The Flash “will link the two universes and feature two Batmans, with Mr. Affleck returning as one and Michael Keaton returning as the other.”
This is huge news for a series that has felt lost, messy, and downright uninteresting at times. Though after the success of Wonder Woman, Shazam!, and Joker, DC is on a hot streak. The next couple films seem like a great direction for the series as well. Zack Snyder’s cut of Justice League is on the way, though he has yet to make a good movie, but perhaps this will be it. James Gunn’s R-Rated The Suicide Squad is due to release next year, which looks to be loads of fun. Overall, DC is trending in the right direction, particularly with the properties that are not directly connected to the man Earth 1 Universe.
However, as they plan a DCEU once more, the problem initially came with being too similar to the MCU. In 2016, Marvel and DC released two films with their lead Superheroes fighting each other, while Marvel did the groundwork with origin stories and two team-up films already, DC did not and was in fact introducing their latest Batman in Batman V. Superman.
With this announcement of the Multiverse in the DCEU, it feels jus the same. Marvel is gearing up for the strangest run of their existence. With Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, WandaVision, and Spider-man 3 all hinting toward a multiverse, it is clear that DC wants to try and do the same. Expect they have not done the leg work yet.
To be fair, the comics have done it for years, and the DC TV division did it a few years ago, but the more DC announces similar things to Marvel, the less interesting the DCEU becomes.
We’ll have to wait and see, but DC films have been the best when they are nothing like Marvel.
