DC CEOs James Gunn And Peter Safran Address Casting Rumors And Chapter 1 Of The New DC Universe

At the end of January 2022, new Co-CEOs of DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran, announced the first ten film and television projects within the first chapter of the new DC Universe, Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters. The announced projects include Superman: Legacy; The Brave and The Bold; Creature Commandos; Swamp Thing; and a Green Lantern series, Lanterns.

When the duo was announced last year, Gunn and Safran released joint statement: “We’re honored to be the stewards of these DC characters we’ve loved since we were children. We look forward to collaborating with the most talented writers, directors, and actors in the world to create an integrated, multilayered universe that still allows for the individual expression of the artists involved. Our commitment to… the DC stable of characters is only equaled by our commitment to the wonder of human possibility these characters represent.”

The launch begins on July 11th, 2025, with the release of Superman: Legacy. The film is written by Gunn, who described the new Superman as “the true foundation of our creative vision for the DC Universe.” Currently, the film does not have a director attached, nor has there been any attempt to begin looking for the new Superman.

Twitter account @DCULeaks posted that Superman casting had begun and claimed that little-known actor, Luke Eisner, was the lead contender to play the DCU’s Man of Steel. Gunn commented on the post, writing, “False (casting has not begun).”

Meanwhile, the next DC Studios movie to hit theaters will be Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Directed by David F. Sandberg, who directed the first movie, the film stars a large returning cast, including Zachary Levi as Shazam; Asher Angel as Billy Batson; Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy Freeman; and their posse of fellow foster kids; as well new members Rachel Zegler, Lucy Liu, and Helen Mirren.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods will be released in theaters on March 17th.
