Warner Bros. is continuing to develop films for the DC brand, this time with a feature film starring Jaime Reyes, who is better known as The Blue Beetle. The character of Blue Beetle has been around since 1939, however this portrayal of the character with the alias of Jaime Reyes has been around since 2006 starting with Infinite Crisis #5 in the comics. Although he has appeared in several animated shows for DC, this will serve as the character’s first major theatrical appearance.
Not only is this character appearing on film for the first time, but this will also be the first time there will be a stand alone superhero movie with a Latino lead. There have been plenty of Latino superhero characters to appear in comic books films such as El Diablo in DC’s own Suicide Squad from 2016, however there has yet to be one with a solo outing. Considering the success of movies like Black Panther and Wonder Woman, paving the way for more diversity in terms of superhero leads, this could benefit DC big time as audiences are willing to watch different types of leading actors and actresses in tent-pole films. Also beneficial is that according to the MPAA, Latino audiences add a high per-capita attendance when it comes to going to the movies. Therefore, the appeal of a character like Jaime Reyes who is of Hispanic ethnicity is fairly high for the modern day movie audiences.
No word yet on who is directing, but writer of the upcoming Miss Bala, Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, has been in talks to write the script. Producer Zev Foreman, known for films such as Colossal and many others will serve as the producer for the DC Superhero film.
