The ongoing legal battles circling around Harvey Weinstein continue. The sexual assault retrial, revolving an incident in 2006, has concluded its second day in front of the judge.
This is only the latest in a long line of Weinstein’s appearances in headlines alleging sexual misconduct and assault. For several years now, he’s had many allegations brought against him which he’s taken to appealing.
Miriam Haley is the defendant in the case in question against Weinstein, accusing him of sexual assault. Haley, a producer herself, worked on projects that were made with Weinstein as a producer, as Deadline notes.
As the story was told within the courtroom, Weinstein forced himself onto Haley in a bedroom in his own apartment, and proceeded to orally rape Haley. Several of Haley’s friends were called upon to testify, with one even openly showing the regret she feels over the advice she offered to her nearly 20 years ago.
One of Haley’s friends, Christine Pressman, heard about what happened from her and advised her to do nothing. Reportedly, she told her that ‘Harvey Weinstein is the king of New York. He is extremely powerful. You are not. You are here on a tourist visa.” She made it clear to the courtroom that she regrets giving this advice.
Reportedly, the defense on behalf of Weinstein called Pressman’s own statement “prejudicial.” After picking apart several aspects of what she said, the defense called for a mistrial before the case halted for a day.
The trial will pick back up again on Tuesday.
