People just won’t stop making films about Tarzan. Since Elmo Lincoln donned the signature loincloth in Tarzan of the Apes in 1918, there have been roughly 100 films centered around the character. Most younger viewers probably associate Tarzan as an animated character thanks to Disney’s 1999 animated film Tarzan. And while the animated tradition is living on thanks to a German CGI rendition, Tarzan is coming back to the big screen in the flesh. Just not right away.
David Yates of Harry Potter fame is directing a new live action version of the classic story. The film has already found it’s Tarzan: Alexander Skarsgard. Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street) will provide the film’s leading lady, and Christoph Waltz and Samuel L. Jackson are also attached. And now the film officially has a release date: July 1, 2016.
The film is based on a script by Stuart Beattie (The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise) and Craig Brewer (Hustle and Flow), but there’s no word on whether it will follow the traditional story or do something new. In fact, the only detail we know about the production other than the cast the release date, is that it will be released in 3D. So we have plenty of in your face vine swinging action to look forward to if nothing else.
Tarzan has a talented cast and a director who’s no stranger to blockbusters. But after nearly a century of myriad retellings, one wonders if the source material is just a little tired. Either way, we’ve got a while to wait before we find out.
