Who was Herman J, Mankiewicz? He was the man who wrote, what is considered, “One of the Greatest Films Ever Made”- Citizen Kane. Being that the film is an iconic piece of work, one has to wonder the process of how it was made and the newest film from David Fincher (Se7en, Zodiac, The Social Network and Gone Girl) explores the life of the screenwriter and well as his struggles with working with Orson Welles, the star, co-writer and director of Citizen Kane. The script was written by Fincher’s father, Jack Fincher, who was most notably was the chief editor of Life Magazine.
The script was written in the ’90s with plans for David to direct after his third film The Game was released in 1997. It never came to fruition but was offically announced in July of 2019. Jack Fincher died in 2003. The film stars Academy Award Winner Gary Oldman in the title role as Heman J Mankiewicz (Mank for short) and the supporting cast includes Amanda Seyfried, Charles Dance, Lily Collins and Tom Burke as Orson Welles.
The film’s first trailer does give off that 1940’s era feel and the music also brings us back to that time (graciously provided by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross). The film is presented in black and white and is scheduled to be released via Netflix on December 4. Prior to that, the film will have a limited release in theaters starting sometime in Novemeber with no exact date confirmed at this time.
The teaser trailer already looks impressive and we can only patiently await for its arrival to theaters and on Netflix. It surely gives off the feels of the Golden Age of Hollywood. Check it out below!
