After the recent announcement that James Gunn is planning on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 being his last, Dave Bautista, the actor behind Drax, has told Digital Spy that the franchise’s third film may be the last we see of the destroyer. It seems that the decision is Bautista’s own, rather than being a result of a change to Drax’s character.
“There were talks for a while about a Drax and Mantis film,” Bautista said. “It was really because it was James Gunn’s idea. He really wanted to do a Drax and Mantis film. He laid it out to me. I thought it was such a brilliant idea, but I haven’t heard any follow-up from the studio. I don’t think they’re very interested, or it doesn’t fit into the way they have things mapped out. But other than that, no. I mean, as far as my obligations, I’ve got Guardians 3, and that’s probably going to be the end of Drax.”
The actor also recently told JoBlo that there’s “not a chance in hell” he’d reprise the role in a TV series. Bautista has been openly critical of Disney since they fired Gunn for inappropriate jokes made on Twitter long before his work on the Guardians of the Galaxy. The actor even considered not working on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after the firing.
“I don’t know what the script of the third film is, to be honest with you. There was a script years ago that obviously is going to have to change because the whole direction of the Marvel universe has changed,” Bautista said.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to release May 5, 2023. Bautista is also starring in Zack Snyder‘s zombie heist film Army of the Dead, which is releasing on Netflix May 21.
