The force is strong with this one. In an auction for many iconic props from sci-fi and action films, Darth Vader’s iconic lightsaber sold for a record setting price for any prop from a galaxy far, far away.
The lightsaber in particular was used for both Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi, used during two of the most iconic duels of the series, with one being immediately followed by the iconic twist that Vader is Luke Skywalker’s father. The prop was held by David Prowse, the man responsible for Vader’s imposing physique, as well as Bob Anderson, one of the stunt doubles for the character.
Hollywood Reporter notes that the prop sold for a final price of $3,654,000, with the final bid hitting $2,900,000. This means that Vader’s lightsaber, the only lightsaber to be sold from the Original Trilogy, is now the most expensive item to be sold from a Star Wars film ever.
In terms of Star Wars, the auction also saw Anakin Skywalker’s lightsaber used for dueling sequences during the Prequel Trilogy sell to a lucky winner. Other items sold include the bullwhip used by Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade, and the Ressikan Flute of Captain Picard from Star Trek: The Next Generation.
