Director Darren Aronofsky has made career out of doing something completely different with each film. From Requiem for a Dream to The Wrestler and from Black Swan to Noah, Aronofsky has proven time and time again why he’s a visionary filmmaker. With his latest film, mother!, Aronofksy told Vulture that he was “working on a kid’s movie,” when, in a fit of inspiration, he furiously crafted the script for mother! As evident from the official trailer, this sudden inspiration has lent itself to the big screen, for what little we’ve seen of the film, it appears creatively uninhibited and fearless.
With an all-star cast that includes Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, and Michelle Pfeiffer, mother! follows Lawrence’s character (billed simply as “Mother”) as her marriage unravels due to uninvited guests. Marketing has purposefully kept the plot under wraps, but the latest clip released by Paramount Pictures pits Lawrence again Pfeiffer. In the clip, Pfeiffer menacingly asks Lawrence, “Why don’t you want kids?” Lawrence reacts fearfully to the question while the implication of Pfeiffer’s prodding remains unclear.
Aronofsky, by harkening back to Requiem for a Dream and Black Swan, channels Roman Polanski (Rosemary’s Baby, Repulsion) with mother!, clearly inspired by the director’s mastery of household terror and marital unease.
Mother! hits the big screen on September 15.
