Hans Zimmer is developing the score for X-Men: Dark Phoenix, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The news comes two years after the notable composer announced in March 2016 that he would never work on another superhero film score again.
Zimmer returns to the genre following 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, a film he co-scored with Dutch composer Junkie XL. He earned his own superhero cape after composing film scores for the Christopher Nolan-directed Dark Knight trilogy, along with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and 2013’s Man of Steel. Zimmer had previously stated that finding inspiration for Batman v Superman was a difficult task after over a decade of work on the three Batman films.
The break may have done the trick. X-Men star Evan Peters revealed the news – perhaps mistakingly – on MTV’s Happy Sad Confused podcast. Zimmer is replacing John Ottoman, who previously composed the score for X-Men: Apocalypse and X-Men: Days of Future Past. Zimmer himself was nominated for an Oscar for Nolan’s critically acclaimed war epic, Dunkirk.
Fans won’t have to wait too long for the next Zimmer score; X-Men: Dark Phoenix is set for a November 2, 2018 release.
