28 Years Later is now just a few weeks away from its long awaited release. After its debut, fans still have two more movies to look forward to, with director Danny Boyle giving even more reason to be excited for them.
28 Days Later follows a group of survivors after a bizarre disease spreads across the world. As it turns everyone into mindless, vicious monsters, the survivors must find the line between keeping their humanity and doing the unthinkable to survive. Cillian Murphy headlined 28 Days Later, alongside Naomie Harris, Brendan Gleeson, and Christopher Eccleston.
While still a continuation of the story, Variety notes that 28 Years Later is meant to be the jumping off point for a new trilogy. From 28 Years Later will come The Bone Temple, which will, in turn, lead into a third film to round out the story.
Murphy didn’t return for the sequel, 28 Weeks Later, and isn’t slated to appear in the new installment. However, Boyle told Business Insider how that won’t be the case for the film after 28 Years Later, simply saying “you’ll have to wait” to see the character. He also said that Murphy may be helping the third installment specifically when it comes to funding it.
Going even further, Variety noted that Boyle told IGN a little more about Murphy’s involvement. He said that “there’s a handover section to the next film as well. So it’s very ambitious.” After saying there’s the matter of waiting to see how the first does financially, he added that “everybody’s standing by for that, really. Including Cillian.”
28 Years Later hits theaters June 20th.
