Daniel Dae Kim, known for his role as detective Chin Ho Kelly in Hawaii Five-0, is set to produce a movie adaptation of the new romantic comedy novel A Sweet Mess, by author Jayci Lee. He is attached to star in the movie as well.
The Hollywood Reporter first reported the news. Published by Macmillan on Tuesday, July 14, the book follows a former pampered socialite turned successful small town baker and her complicated—romantic—relationship with a handsome celebrity food critic whose scathing review of her bakery leaves her scrambling to redeem her business. How she goes about doing this? By taking a spot on the critic’s new celebrity cooking show.
“I wrote A Sweet Mess to share a story featuring Asian-Americans as main characters. To show them as fellow Americans who laugh, cry, and love. Now everyone will be able to see A Sweet Mess come to life on screen. My heart is bursting,” said Lee.
Kim will produce the film through his 3AD banner which is also behind the ABC TV series The Good Doctor. 3AD holds a first look television deal for the movie with Amazon.
“All of us at 3AD are so excited to be working with Jayci on A Sweet Mess. We were completely charmed by her work and look forward to bringing this story to the screen,” said Kim.
Kim is represented by UTA, Brillstein Entertainment Partners and Gang Tyre. Lee is repped by CAA and the Nancy Yost Literary Agency.
