Amid recent changes behind the scenes, actress Daisy Ridley has provided clarity on the anticipated release date for Star Wars: New Jedi Order. In development since late 2022, the new installment of the beloved franchise is expected to bring Ridley back as Rey, with the story picking up 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker. Originally slated for a possible 2026 release, the film’s timeline remains uncertain, particularly after writer Steven Knight’s recent departure from the project.

Ridley, speaking with The Playlist’s Discourse Podcast about her role in the thriller Magpie, was asked directly about rumors regarding a Christmas 2026 release date for the Star Wars movie. Ridley clarified that while Lucasfilm has no official release date set, the creative team is focused on getting every detail right before confirming any timelines.

“We don’t have a date,” Ridley said. “I think the creative process is really a journey. I’m genuinely excited about what’s coming, but I think we have the luxury of making sure this is the right thing. So when everything is ready to go, we will be going.”

Knight’s departure has reportedly caused some delay in the film’s production, initially set to begin in late 2025. Fans of the Star Wars series are aware of the post-production demands of each installment, which can take months, if not years, to finalize. Aiming for the previous release date of Christmas 2026 could put pressure on the team if a new writer isn’t secured soon, though Disney has options for other dates. 

December 17, 2027, is reserved for an untitled Star Wars movie, which could accommodate New Jedi Order if production requires additional time.

While this timeline uncertainty may be disappointing for fans, Ridley’s enthusiasm and the studio’s commitment to quality indicate that patience may be rewarded.
