So much for casting woes over on the set of Disney’s live-action Aladdin. In what is starting to feel like publicity stunt, the official casting for the film’s two leads Aladdin and Jasmine was announced today at Disney’s D23 Expo in Anaheim, California. Last week, sources reported that after months and months of search, director Guy Ritchie and the Disney studio were still grasping for air in their main casting. It seems the tables have turned…
Canadian actor Mena Massoud will play the eponymous role of Aladdin, while Power Rangers breakout Naomi Scott will play Princess Jasmine. They will be joining the already cast Will Smith in the role of Genie.
Up-and-comer and soon to be superstar Massoud can soon be seen in the Jack Ryan television series, which is set to star John Krasinski. Aside from donning the Pink Power Ranger suit in this year’s movie reboot, Scott is also known for her roles in the Disney Channel original movie Lemonade Mouth as well as her role in the television series Terra Nova. Both actors have experience in the industry, but are also virtual unknowns. Aladdin will be the perfect outlet for Disney to create new stars in Massoud and Scott.
An official release date has not been set for Aladdin, but Ritchie and company plan to begin production this year. Check back for more updates as they are revealed.
