Disney’s live-action reimagining of Pinocchio directed by Robert Zemeckis’ will be released on Disney+ in late 2021. As confirmed by Deadline, Pinocchio has added Oscar nominee Cynthia Erivo as the Blue Fairy and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the voice of Jiminy Cricket.
Other cast members include Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Pinocchio, Keegan-Michael Key as Honest John, Luke Evans as the coachman, Tom Hanks as Geppetto, and Lorraine Bracco as the voice of Sofia the Seagull, a new character in the film. The film will combine live action and visual effects.
The Blue Fairy is a magical being who grants Geppetto’s wish by transforming his puppet Pinocchio into a real boy. She is also a companion to Pinocchio and Jiminy Cricket throughout their many adventures.
The film was written by Zemeckis and Chris Weitz, and will begin production next month in the U.K. Andrew Miano and Weitz are producing the film through their company Depth of Field.
Cynthia Erivo is known for her roles in Harriet and Widows. Her next project is the show Genius in which she stars as Aretha Franklin. On Tuesday, it was announced that Erivo would be starring in the upcoming Apple TV+ series Roar. She is represented by UTA, Authentic Talent and Literary Management, ID Public Relations and Peikoff Mahan Law Office.
