The long-awaited 101 Dalmations prequel spinoff Cruella just recently released to positive reception and almost $50 million worldwide, and it looks like Disney is already getting ideas for proper sequel. According to The Hollywood Reporter, director Craig Gillespie and screenwriter Tony McNamara are set to return, and although there’s no confirmation that Emma Stone will reprise the title role, it would be hard for the film to work without her.
“We are very pleased with Cruella’s box office success, in conjunction with its strong Disney Plus Premier Access performance to date,” said a Disney spokesperson in a statement. “The film has been incredibly well received by audiences around the world, with a 97% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes in addition to A’s in every demographic from CinemaScore on opening weekend, ranking it among the most popular of our live-action reimaginings. We look forward to a long run as audiences continue to enjoy this fantastic film.”
Over the past few years, Disney has worked on updating their classic animated features with live-action remakes like The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast and Mulan, but Cruella is the first live-action spin-off of a classic animated film that tells its own story. Considering the surprising success of Cruella it wouldn’t be surprising if Disney fans start to see more original spin-offs and fewer remakes.
