Back in the early 2000’s, Disney adapted the popular book series The Princess Diaries, by Meg Cabot, into a movie directed by Garry Marshall. The movie starred Anne Hathaway as Mia, a teenage girl from New York City who discovers that she’s actually the princess of a small country named Genovia, and Julie Andrews as Mia’s grandmother. Even though the movie deviated heavily from the book, it was a huge success allowed to Disney make a sequel called The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. More importantly, the movie launched Hathaway’s career as a movie star.
Now more than a decade later, rumors are starting to spread about a possible third The Princess Diaries movie that will be exclusive to Disney+. According to MovieWeb, this third movie would most likely adapt the storyline of the latest book The Princess Diaries, Volume XI: Royal Wedding. Spoiler Warning: In that book Mia is about to marry her love interest Micheal when she discovers that her father had another daughter named Olivia, a half-black girl living in New Jersey. Mia tracks down Olivia and brings her into the family.
However, as stated earlier, The Princess Diaries movie series deviates heavily from the book series so it’s hard to say if the movie will stick to the book’s original plot. In the film series, Mia becomes princess because her father dies, but in the book he was alive and simply had curable testicular cancer, albeit at the expense of his ability to have more kids. In the books Micheal remains Mia’s love interest, but in the movies she leaves him for an original character named Nicholas Deveraux, played by Chris Pine. Also Julia Andrew’s character Grandmere, is not sweet and kind like Andrews.
So even if you have read the books The Princess Diaries 3 will still be a surprise!
