Controversial Netflix Movie ‘Cuties’ Could Be Facing a Lawsuit

To say that the Netflix movie Cuties is controversial would be an understatement. Critics and movie fans around the world have accused Cuties of sexualizing underage girls and allegedly exploiting child actresses. Many people have demanded Netflix to remove the movie from streaming, but Netflix has not given in to the backlash.

Now Netflix could be facing a lawsuit and even criminal charges because of Cuties. According to sources like Cinema Blend and NBC, Netflix has been indicted by grand jury in Tyler County, which is in Texas. Texas Representative Matt Schaefer announced over Twitter that the jury indicted Netflix because the movie allegedly, “depicts the lewd exhibition of the genitals or pubic area of a clothed or partially clothed child who was younger than 18 years of age.” These are felony charges in the state of Texas. Netflix has released a statement saying, “This charge is without merit and we stand by the film.”

Cuties is a French coming of age movie that follows the journey of Amy, a 11 year old Sengal girl living in Paris with her mother and brothers. The community that Amy’s family is a part of is extremely religious and conservative. Feeling stifled by her environment, Amy discovers and quickly joins a dance group called the Cuties. The Cuties appear to perform in revealing outfits and use age inappropriate dance moves according to critics, which is the source of the controversy. The movie’s director Maïmouna Doucouré claims that the movie’s story was inspired by her own experience watching an amateur talent show, and Netflix has stated that, “Cuties is a social commentary against the sexualization of young children.”
