We reported the release of the first poster for the The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug yesterday, and today Peter Jackson and co. gifted fans with the first theatrical trailer for the second installment within The Hobbit trilogy. Audiences followed Bilbo Baggins on the beginning of his journey to reclaim the Kingdom of Erebor from the dragon Smaug within the The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and we will get to observe the characters resume their quest to slay the notorious dragon within The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.
This clip introduces us to some of the new faces of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings franchise. Benedict Cumberbatch, who had a minor role in the first Hobbit film as Necromancer, stands front and center as the voice of dragon Smaug. Luke Evans also appears as a new addition to the cast in the role of Bard the Bowman, and Evangeline Lily will fulfill the role of Tauriel. Recurring cast members include Martin Freeman as Bilbo, Cate Blanchett as Galadriel, Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Richard Armitage as Thorin, and Elijah Wood as Frodo. Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Guillermo del Toro, and director Peter Jackson penned the film’s screenplay (collectively they wrote the screenplay to all three parts, which were filmed in one extended shoot). The Hobbit: the Desolation of Smaug will be released in theaters on December 13th.
