In 2000 Jason Blum founded Blumhouse Productions, a production company specializing in the horror genre. To date Blumhouse has produced over 30 mini-budget, high-quality films that have been released to large audiences and have made Jason Blum the undisputed King of Horror. Putting aside costly special effects, Blumhouse searches for scripts that rely on paranormal activity and the fear of the unknown such as hits Insidious and The Purge. This concept proved successful. Paranormal Activity, was made for just $15,000, but grossed over $200 million and spawned a franchise. It’s no wonder Universal has joined Jason for Curve, starring Dancing With The Stars alum Julianne Hough (Rock of Ages, Safe Haven, Footloose).
Curve, a horror/thriller, is being helmed by Iaia Softley, who directed Kate Hudson in the Skeleton Key. Lee Patterson is re-writing Kimberly Loftstrom Johnson’s original script. The project will be overseen by Universal’s Scott Bernstein.
Hough plays a bride-to-be who uses poor judgement one night by picking up a charming hitch-hiker on a desolate highway. She quickly discovers her mistake and decides to intentionally overturn her car to escape. The plan backfires and she is trapped in an overturned vehicle with her predator.
Blumhouse, meanwhile, is quite literally building on the success of Insidious, Chapter 2, which grossed over $40 million in it’s first week, by creating a Haunted House in downtown L.A. for Halloween. Hiring Josh Randall and Kristjan Thor who created L.A.’s ‘Blackout Haunted House’, the Blumhouse of Horrors is taking over 6 floors of The Variety Arts Center (70,000 sq. feet). Called, ‘Blumhouse of Horrors, The Purge:Fear The Night’, it is co-produced with Josh Simon as an interactive art experiment. Purge: Fear The Night will be open from September 27-November 3.
