With the third Star Trek feature film coming out later this week in the franchise successfully rebooted by J.J. Abrams, Paramount announced Monday that sequel to Star Trek Beyond will see Chris Hemsworth (Thor) reprising his role as George Kirk.
Some type of time travel/time shift ploy famous in the science fiction series would have to be involved. The actor played Captain James T. Kirk’s father in 2009’s Star Trek, but his character went down heroically with his starship in the first few minutes of the film. According to Paramount, the Star Trek sequel will allow Captain Kirk to “cross paths with a man he never had a chance to meet, but whose legacy has haunted him since the day he was born: his father.”
The studio said in its statement that the main franchise stars are expected to return, including Chris Pine (Capt Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Zoe Saldana (Uhura), Simon Pegg (Scotty), Karl Urban (Dr. McCoy), and John Cho (Sulu). It has also been announced that no actor will take over the character of Chekov, played in the first three films by Anton Yelchin who tragically died in an accident last month. No director is as yet attached to the project.
J.D. Payne and Patrick McCay will write the sequel. J.J. Abrams and Lindsey Weber will produce via Bad Robot, while David Ellison and Dana Goldberg of Skydance will executive produce.
In discussing Hemsworth’s possible return during a Star Trek Beyond press conference last week, Abrams said, “The answer is 100 percent yes, and it’s incredibly exciting.”
Hemsworth is best known for his role as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films Thor, The Avengers, Thor: The Dark World and Avengers: Age of Ultron. He is currently filming Thor: Ragnarok and is rumored to also appear in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1. He was one of the titular characters in 2012’s Snow White and the Hunstman. He can be seen currently in theaters in the rebooted Ghostbusters.
