Coming to America is finally getting its long anticipated sequel.
Star from the original comedy, Eddie Murphy, announced that Coming to America 2 will be “Officially moving forward” at Paramount Studios. Paramount will reportedly employ Empire’s Craig Brewer to direct the sequel.
Coming to America 2 is set around Prince Akeem learning of a long-lost son and returning to America in order to find his unlikely heir to the throne of Zamunda.
Fans of the original 1988 comedy will be excited to hear that Kenya Barris – creator of black-ish – will be rewriting a script created by original Coming to America writers, Barry Blaustein and David Sheffield. Paramount also plans on maintaining original cast members, James Earl Jones, Shari Headley, Arsenio Hall, and John Amos – although no official deals with the supporting cast have been announced.
Director Brewer recently worked with Murphy in the upcoming comedy Dolemite is My Name. Murphy had nothing but praise for the director stating, “We’ve assembled a great team that will be led by Craig Brewer, who just did an amazing job on Dolemite, and I’m looking forward to bringing all these classic and beloved characters back to the big screen.”
Barris also praised the director saying, “From Hustle and Flow to his work with Eddie [Murphy] on Dolemite Is My Name, [Brewer] never fails to blow me away. He is a true auteur and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have him on board.”
Coming to America 2 does not have set date to start production.
