On December 22nd, the official trailer for Coming 2 America was released. The film is the long-awaited sequel to 1988’s Coming to America, starring Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall. Murphy and Hall are both back to reprise their roles. Murphy is back as Prince Akeem in his royal homeland of Zamunda in the sequel, and the trailer reveals that Akeem is now the newly-crowned King Akeem. Arsenio Hall will return as Semmi, and the plot of the film revolves around the two of them trying to find the son Akeem never knew about, Lavelle (Jermaine Fowler).
Akeem and Semmi’s goal in the sequel is to groom Lavelle into a prince. James Earl Jones will also reprise his role as Akeem’s father. The film has a star-studded cast, alongside Murphy and Hall, including Leslie Jones, Jermaine Fowler, Tracy Morgan, KiKi Layne, Shari Headley, Wesley Snipes and Paul Bates. Kenya Barris, Barry W. Blaustein and David Sheffield wrote the screenplay for the sequel. The original director John Landis will not return, as Craig Brewer will be taking over.
According to Deadline, the film is set to release on Amazon Prime on March 5th, 2021, with some countries getting a theatrical release through the original distributor Paramount Pictures.
