Having swept up several awards at the many film festivals it was screened at, the vampire-comedy What We Do in the Shadows is set for a wide release here in the States starting next year in select cities. The film was screened at TIFF and Sundanceand, and comes from the comedic minds of Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords) and Taika Waititi (Eagle vs Shark). The New Zealand film’s premise of four vampire roommates navigating the modern world was well-received at the festivals, even garnering the Toronto Film Festival People’s Choice Award.
Clement and Waititi created a film that sets the four roommates–ranging from 183 to 8000 years old–in the modern world, squabbling over both household chores and how to get their next meal. Clement and Waititi co-directed and co-wrote the film as well as starred in it, along with other comedic actors Rhys Darby, Jonathan Brugh, Cori Gonzalez‐Macuer, Stu Rutherford, and Jackie Van Beek.
What We Do in the Shadows‘ theatrical release will be facilitated through Unison Films in partnership with Paladin and Funny or Die. The film itself was produced by Unison Films and Defender Films; this is Unison’s third film.
The film will be released starting in New York and Los Angeles on February 13, followed by a February 20 release in San Francisco, Philadelphia, Boston, Seattle, and Washington, D.C. then continue to spread across the country throughout the rest of February and into March.
