According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new Sony film Holmes and Watson has added Academy Award-nominated actor Ralph Fiennes (A Bigger Splash) to its cast. The comedy stars Will Ferrell (Talladega Nights) and John C. Reilly (Step Brothers) in the title roles of the great fictional detective Sherlock Holmes and his sidekick Dr. John Watson. Hugh Laurie (Netflix’s Night Manager) is also in the cast. Fiennes and Laurie purportedly will play characters from the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle canon.
Etan Cohen (Get Hard) is helming the film from a screenplay he wrote. Ferrell, Adam McKay, Jimmy Miller and Clayton Townsend are producing. Jonathan Kadin is overseeing the movie for Columbia. Chris Henchy and Jessica Elbaum are overseeing for Gary Sanchez.
Fiennes boasts an impressive body of cinematic work in versatile roles as a brooding romantic lead, hero, layered antihero, villain, comedic foil, as well as voice artist. He first came into international fame for his intense portrayal of Nazi commandant Amon Goeth in Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List, for which Fiennes received a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination. He received a second Oscar nom for portraying the doomed Count Almásy opposite Kristin Scott Thomas (Suite Française) in the romantic period film An English Patient. He is known to Harry Potter fans everywhere for his role in the movie franchise as Harry’s archenemy, he-who-must-not-be named, Lord Voldemort. Fiennes has appeared in several critically acclaimed films, including Fernando Mereilles’ The Constant Gardener, Martin McDonagh’s In Bruges, Stephen Daldry’s The Reader, Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker, Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel, the Coen Brothers’ Hail, Caesar! and Luca Guadagnino’s A Bigger Splash, among many other notables. He voiced the Moon King in this year’s stop-motion animation Kubo and the Two Strings, and will be the voice of Alfred Pennyworth in The Lego Batman Movie.
Holmes and Watson recently began shooting in London.
