Naomi Watts and Odessa A’zion have officially joined the cast of Cody Fern’s feature directorial debut, currently filming in Montreal. The still-untitled film already includes Sarah Paulson, Dianne Wiest and Toby Wallace.
The film is set against the backdrop of a Broadway production of Bertolt Brecht’s Mother Courage. It is described as a psychological family drama unfolding under the pressure of the theater:
A celebrated actress whose life begins to unravel on the eve of her greatest performance. When her sister April (Watts) arrives in New York after a 30-year estrangement, the stage is set for a tense family confrontation.
Watts, a two-time Oscar nominee, most recently starred in Ryan Murphy’s All’s Fair alongside Paulson, Kim Kardashian and Niecy Nash. A’zion has received critical praise for her role in the Best Picture-nominated Marty Supreme. She also made headlines recently after pulling out of A24’s Deep Cuts amid controversy surrounding concerns that her ethnic background did not align with the source material.
Fern, who previously appeared in American Horror Story, will be directing and also co-wrote the script with actor Devon Bostick (Oppenheimer). Yves Bélanger (Big Little Lies, Dallas Buyers Club) is the cinematographer. The executive producers currently attached to the project are Timothy White, Tanya Lapointe, Amanda Freedman, Lucile Vainstein, Raphael Quenard and Patrick DesRosiers.
