The shocking true story of a bear high on cocaine is getting a film.
Directed by Elizabeth Banks, Cocaine Bear tells the story of a drug smuggling operation gone wrong, leading to a black bear ingesting copious amounts of cocaine and goes on a drug-fueled rampage.
Produced by Elizabeth Banks, Max Handleman, Phil Lord, Aditya Sood, Brian Duffield, Chris Miller, Christine Sun and Matt Reilly.
Cocaine Bear is one of the final film appearances of the late Ray Liotta.
The real bear, who is stuffed and on display at the Kentucky Fun Mall, was dubbed ‘Pablo Eskobear’ – a nod to the famed drug kingpin Pablo Escobar.
The film is loosely based on the real story, which dates to 1985 when Pablo Eskobear ripped open a duffel bag and consumed 40 packages of cocaine, according to the Associated Press.
“The bear got to it before we could, and he tore the duffel bag open, got him some cocaine, and OD’d [overdosed],” AP quoted Gary Garner of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation as saying.
Cocaine Bear takes the comedic approach of quite a unique story.
The film is set to release in theaters on February 24, 2023, by Universal.
