Just like movies based on video games, most movie adaptions of board games are not well liked by critics or audiences, with one exception: 1985’s Clue. While the movie was not a major critical success and a financial loss when it first came out, over the years Clue has since become a beloved cult classic for its accuracy to the game scenario and dark humor.
Clue has even become so popular that 20th Century is now working on a reboot/remake produced by Ryan Reynolds, who will also star in the movie. It’s currently unknown what character Reynolds will be playing and we don’t know anything about the remaining cast but, according to Movie Web, director James Bobin has been hired to direct the project. Bobin is probably best known for directing the recent The Muppets movie, as well as Dora and the Lost City of Gold.
Clue’s plot followed the premise of the board game. One night a group of several different eccentric characters: Colonel Mustard, Mrs. White, Mrs. Peacock, Mr. Green, Professor Plum, and Miss Scarlet, are invited to the mansion of the mysterious Mr. Boddy. Also in the house is Mr. Boddy’s butler Wadsworth, who was famously played by Tim Curry. It is not long before Mr. Boddy is predictably murdered by someone, forcing the guests to untangle the mystery of Mr. Boddy’s murder. However, Clue is unique because it had three different endings, with the killer’s identity being different in each ending. When the movie first released in theaters, audiences would be shown one of the three endings, but home media releases of Clue included all three versions of the ending.
While most of the details surrounding the Clue remake are still a mystery, let’s hope the reboot will keep its multiple ending gimmick.
