Clint Eastwood is renowned (and sometimes criticized) for his economy as director. With that in the mind, it’s not particularly surprising that his latest feature – Sully starring two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks – will be ready for theaters in laser speed. The film, centering around American pilot Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger’s heroic 2009 emergency landing on the Hudson River, will be released in cinemas on September 9, 2016.
Hanks, who currently stars in Steven Spielberg’s Cold War drama Bridge of Spies, portrays Sullenberger. The film depicts the tense moments aboard U.S. Airways Flight 1549 as a flock of geese knocked out both engines right after take-off from LaGuardia Airport. Sullenberger’s quick thinking centered around a water landing on the Hudson River. The plan worked as all passengers (155 total) survived what could have been a tragic situation.
Warner Bros. will distribute the film that also stars Oscar nominated actress Laura Linney (Kinsey), Aaron Eckhart (Erin Brockovich), Sam Huntington (Superman Returns) and Emmy winner Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad). Sully‘s screenplay is credited to Todd Kamarnicki (Perfect Stranger) based on the book by Jeffrey Zaslow and Sullenberger himself.
This marks Eastwood’s first turn behind the camera since directing the 2014 smash American Sniper. Sully hits theaters on September 9, 2016 and will be presented in IMAX.
