Cinespia, Los Angeles’ most popular outdoor theater experience, has announced its lineup for its 25th anniversary. The event is sponsored by Amazon MGM Studios and Prime Video, and will play a variety of classic movies throughout August. The month starts off with Practical Magic, followed by The Mummy the following week. Later in the month are an X and Pearl double feature, Coming to America and Labyrinth. Cinespia founder John Wyatt said, “The films we’re showcasing this month have earned their place in the cultural conversation because they continue to resonate across generations. Bringing these stories back to the big screen in a communal setting is at the heart of what Cinespia has always been about.”
More screenings will be announced at a separate date. The current list of films and their official descriptions are listed below.
Aug. 1 – Practical Magic
“Sisters are brewing it for themselves in the beloved and bewitching classic. Hex marks the spot for sisters Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as unlucky-in-love witches. When a fiery romance turns dangerous, there’s hell to pay to bring back the dead. Is family a curse, or will a loving coven break the spell? Also starring Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing as the enchanted aunts of your dreams.”
Aug. 8 – The Mummy (1999)
“Can you dig it? The Mummy unearths a rollicking adventure of an afterlife-time, where a bookish librarian and a lovable ne’er-do-well discover that some secrets are better left buried. Holy lore! Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz spark enough chemistry to reanimate the dead, creating not only a blockbuster classic but a sexual awakening for an entire generation. Unwrap one of cinema’s greatest adventures with DJs, drinks, and a crowd of fellow Egyptology lovers (and Egyptology-lover lovers). Whoa, mummy.”
Aug. 15 – Mia Goth Double Feature: “X” + “Pearl”
“It’s a Goth Girl Summer—Mia Goth Girl Summer, that is. Our annual slumber party is back and gloriously blood-soaked with horror’s reigning scream queen on the big screen in X and Pearl. Part adult-film fever dream, part technicolor psychodrama, these cult favorites have ‘wtf’ written all over them, in the best way possible. Axe your friends to join you for peak mayhem and merriment: blood-on-the-dancefloor dance party, photo moments, giveaways, and surprises. You’re a star in our Free Photobooth, just leave your pitchfork at home. I’m not staying on this farm!”
Aug. 22 – Coming To America
“Your royal highness, your picnic is ready. Eddie Murphy’s comedy classic serves a feast of romance, mistaken identities, and enough barbershop philosophy to fill a kingdom. African prince Akeem is trading palaces, from his lavish kingdom to Queens in search of a woman who loves him for him. Rich in laughs, Soul Glo, and regal charm, ‘Coming to America’ remains comedy royalty.”
Aug. 29 – Labyrinth
“40th Anniversary! Follow the babe with the power into Jim Henson’s gloriously weird fantasy wonderland, where goblins sing, doors argue, and David Bowie’s Goblin King serves enough glam-rock charisma to power an entire kingdom. When Sarah (Jennifer Connelly) wishes her baby brother away, she must navigate a labyrinth of riddles, mischief, and magnificent hair before the clock strikes thirteen.”
