Danny Boyle took to the CinemaCon stage to share full second trailer for the Sony Pictures film, 28 Years Later. The post-apocalyptic horror film reunites the Oscar-winning director with Oscar-nominated writer Alex Garland (Civil War, Ex Machina). The two were behind the original 2002 feature, 28 Days Later.
The 2025 film stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Nosferatu, Kraven the Hunter) and Jodie Comer (Killing Eve, The Bikeriders). Oscar-nominee Ralph Fiennes (Conclave, The Menu) narrates from the perspective of a survivor of the original virus. Now, the group of survivors are on a remote English island when one ventures off to discover the horrors of the mainland.
Variety described watching Boyle’s new 28 Years Later trailer as a chilling experience: “Jump scares (many of which rely on sound) abound as monuments built with human skulls pepper what was left of the United Kingdom.”
The Slumdog Millionaire director said, “I love killing the infected. I still love blowing shit up. That’s how my agent describes my best stuff.” Nia DaCosta (Candyman, The Marvels) joined Boyle on stage to promote second film, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. She described her film as informed by Boyle’s, but “very different.”
Boyle spoke of a long-term plan for the franchise, saying that 28 Years Later is going to be the second of three films. He mentioned that Sony had not financed the third project and asked exhibitors to watch their films so he could complete the trilogy.
The first trailer for 28 Years Later is available here. The trailer was named second most watched horror trailer ever.
The film will be in theaters June 20, 2025.
