The first trailer for Christopher Nolan’s next film, The Odyssey, has been released. In true Nolan fashion, the film is not available online because he prefers his trailers to be a cinematic experience.
The first teaser trailer for his Oscar-winning blockbuster Oppenheimer followed the same tactic of only debuting in theaters. The teaser for the film, billed as a “mythic action epic,” will show in front of Jurassic Park Rebirth, which was released in theaters on July 2nd.
However, as people gather to see Rebirth, they are excited about Nolan’s next feature film, and videos of the trailer have been popping up on X. This trailer is releasing unusually early, as the film is still in production and will not release in theaters until July of next year.
There is not much footage in this teaser, as the film is not finished yet. The teaser opens with shots of a dark ocean with a voiceover: “Darkness. Zeus’ law smashed to pieces. I’m without a king since my master died. He knew it was an unwinnable war. And then, somehow, he won it.”
The trailer also shows a scene with Tom Holland’s character, Odysseus’ son Telemachus, having a conversation with an unnamed character played by Jon Bernthal. “I have to find out what happened to my father,” Telemachus says. Bernthal’s character shouts to a room, “Who has a story about Odysseus? You? You have a story? Some say he’s rich. Some say he’s poor. Some said he perished. Some said he’s imprisoned.”
The next scene shows driftwood at sea with a man lying on it, which can be assumed to be Matt Damon as the Greek King. The star-studded cast also includes Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron and Mia Goth.
The epic has a budget of $250 million, making it the most expensive film of Nolan’s career. It will also be shot entirely using IMAX cameras, making it the first film with a major scope to do so. The Greek classic follows the king of Ithaca as he takes a perilous journey home after the Trojan War. The original story shows Odysseus facing off against a slew of mythical beings, such as the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, the enchantress Circe, and traveling to the Underworld.
Filming for the film started in February at locations in Greece, Italy and Morocco. The film is set to release in theaters on July 17, 2026.
