Chris Weitz (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) has been tapped to write the same-sex marriage drama 21 Years to Midnight according to Deadline. The film is based on the nonfiction book that chronicles the case of Obergefell v. Hodges. The news comes less than a year after the U.S. Supreme Court legalized the right for same sex couples to marry in the United States.
The film will follow the legal career of Jim Obergefell, who was the lead plaintiff in the case as well as his partner the late John Arthur. Fox 2000 nabbed the rights to the book in July. The book will release this June. No casting announcements have been made as of yet.
Weitz has worked as a director on the dramas About a Boy (2002), and The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009). He also wrote Disney’s live-action Cinderella (which was released last spring). Weitz also wrote the screenplay for the upcoming Star Wars spin-off film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story which is due in theaters on December 16th.
21 Years to Midnight is likely the first of many movies in the works about the case. We’ll have more on 21 Years to Midnight as it releases.
