CNN has reported that Chris Rock will not be pressing charges against Will Smith. Rock was struck in the face by Smith at the Oscars after Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, referring to her as “G. I. Jane” in reference to her shaved head. Smith’s wife suffers from an autoimmune disorder, Alopecia, which leads to hair loss. Smith cursed at Rock after the altercation to which Rock replied “that was, uhh, greatest night in the history of television” and then Rock continued announcing. It has been confirmed by the LAPD that Rock will not be pressing charges following the incident. The Academy tweeted that they “do not condone violence in any form.”

Smith then went on to win Best Actor for the role of Richard Williams, the father of Venus and Serena Williams, in King Richard. The film was nominated for five other awards, including Best Picture, but the film only won the Oscar for Best Actor. Smith apologized to the Academy, but not to Rock, in his speech where he says that he wants to be a “vessel for love.” This is Smith’s first Oscar win, but this victory has been overshadowed by the altercation with Rock.
