As the old saying goes, all good things must come to an end. Chris Evans must have heard this mantra once or twice, as he is deciding to end his tenure as the noble Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In recent profile for the New York Times, highlighting his new phase on Broadway, he announced that the forthcoming ‘Untitled Avengers 4’ movie will be his last turn as the First Avenger.
“You want to get off the train before they push you off,” he stated in the article. Last year, he was busy filming both upcoming Avengers films back-to-back, and following some reshoots for Avengers 4, that are scheduled for this fall, he will no longer be contractually part of the MCU. That said, this quote speaks a lot more to Evans’ desire to continuing to put out a great product, so only time will tell if he sticks to this statement.
Originally under contract for six films (three for Captain America and three for Avengers), he extended it to include the Avengers 4 film. Many actors look to pursue various projects over the course of their careers and usually don’t like to do the same thing two or three times in a row – let alone seven. He’s also filmed cameos for a few Marvel films outside of the ones he stars in, so it’s safe to say that he deserves to hang up his cape (or shield).
Just as well, he’s not alone in his sentiments as Tony Stark star Robert Downey, Jr. has echoed similar feeling about his stint as Iron Man. In an interview with Australia’s News.com last year he expressed his feelings towards one of his most famous roles: “I just never want to blow it for the last six or seven [MCU movies] I have done by dropping the ball because I decided to go do it one more time. I just want to hang up my jersey before it’s embarrassing.”
It seems we’re approaching the end of an era. It will be interesting to see what Marvel has in store to follow the departure of some of their most bankable stars. The newest addition in the franchise, Avengers: Infinity War, hits theaters April 27th and the ‘Untitled Avengers 4’ film is scheduled for May 2019.
