Despite an earlier confirmation, Chris Evans is now denying that he’ll be suiting up to play Captain America again for Avengers: Doomsday, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
First appearing as the titular character in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, Evans would star in several films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the following years. He eventually retired from the role by giving his trademark shield to Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson/Falcon at the end of Avengers: Endgame in 2019.
Now, with previous MCU collaborators such as Robert Downey Jr. and the Russo Brothers returning to the superhero franchise, speculation grew as to whether Evans would do the same. In an interview with Esquire Magazine, he said:
“That’s not true, though. This always happens. I mean, it happens every couple of years — ever since Endgame. I’ve just stopped responding to it. Yeah, no — happily retired!”
Fans of the MCU may choose to disregard Evans’s answer, however, as a similar situation arose several years before when Andrew Garfield denied being in Spider-Man: No Way Home, only to make grand return as his version of the titular character. Evans himself also returned for a small cameo, albeit playing his version of Johnny Storm/The Human Torch from the Tim Story Fantastic Four movies, in this past summer’s Deadpool & Wolverine.
The actor’s co-star, Anthony Mackie, seemed to add fuel to the fire, saying.
“…I learned that right there. My manager showed me. He’s like, ‘Oh, so I guess Chris is coming back.’ That’s all I know. I haven’t seen a script.”
Avengers: Doomsday is currently set for release on May 1, 2026.
