Steve Rogers, played by Chris Evans, is Captain America: The Winter Soldier. He is a native of the Marvel Universe populated by The Avengers, Iron Man, Thor, and the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the covert agency that Captain America works for.
Captain America doesn’t trust his boss. Why? Because Captain America is a straight-up kind of guy with the highest moral character. He doesn’t trust anything or anyone with secrets, and the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division is an espionage agency with plenty of secrets. That’s why Captain America and his partner Natasha Romanoff, aka the Black Widow played by Scarlet Johansson, are so intriguing – and romantically charged. Natasha doesn’t play by the rules, she could care less about the truth, and she’s full of secrets.
Marvel is billing Captain America: The Winter Soldier, as a less whimsical superhero than the others in the Marvel Universe. The storyline weaves the dark and grim comic book, written by Ed Brubaker, into a political thriller.
The film is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo (You, Me and Dupree), and the script is written by Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus (Captain America: The First Avenger, Pain & Gain, Thor: The Dark World). The story takes place two years after The Avengers and marks the third time Scarlet Johansson will play the Black Widow (following Iron Man 2 and The Avengers).
Comicbook.com quotes Scarlet as loving her character. “The Black Widow is a female character that isn’t just an embellishment. She isn’t just a pretty trophy in a sexy outfit spicing up the action. She is the action. She fights shoulder to shoulder on the streets with Captain America. They don’t fly around in space or have fancy powers”.
Emily VanCamp of TV’s Revenge is being introduced for the first time as Sharon Carter aka Agent 13, a relative of Peggy Carter from the first Cap pic. She will work alongside the Black Widow, adding depth and grit to the story. The relationship between Natasha and Steve deepens as they both begin to question who they really are, what they’re doing, and what they really want.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier takes place after a global fallout, when a powerful villain, who used to be Steve Rogers’ best friend, threatens the safety of Washington, D.C. Anthony Mackie (Pain & Gain, The Hurt Locker), and Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction, The Avengers, Django Unchained) also star.
Produced by Kevin Feiger and Marvel, Captain America: The Winter Soldier premieres April 4, 2014.
