Scott Cawthon, creator of the popular video game Five Nights at Freddy’s, recently announced that the long awaited film will begin filming in Spring 2021. The film will be directed by Gremlins’ Chris Columbus. Based on the infamous horror video game, the film is about a man who begins a job working as a night watch security guard at the restaurant Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. While working, he begins to discover that the animatronics move at night and are deadly. The series began in 2014, where players worked as the security guard fighting dangerous animatronics. In the following six years since the original’s release, Five Nights at Freddy’s has had numerous sequels, spinoffs, and books.
Rumors of a film adaptation have been in talks since 2015, and everytime it seemed that it was finally going to be made, there were multiple director and script changes. In 2017, Blumhouse entered the picture, and it seemed like the film was definitely going to be made this time. A year later however, the screenplay had been ditched. In June 2020, producer Jason Blum said that progress on the film was quickly moving forward.
According to Screen Rant, just this past weekend, creator Scott Cawthon talked about the updated script on Reddit, saying: “It’s fun, it’s scary, and it has a great central story. The bad news is that there won’t be any more screenplays to add to this list since we’re officially making the ‘Mike’ screenplay”. That’s when he revealed that the long awaited film is finally being filmed. Five Nights at Freddy’s is said to be released in July 2024.
