Glee star Chris Colfer and Sons of Anarchy star Ron Perlman will join the voice cast of Robodog, Marza Animation Planet’s first original 3D CG feature production, and will voice the lead canine characters. Director of beloved live action/animation hybrid Stuart Little, Henry F. Anderson III. will be directing Robodog.
Colfer is best known for his role as Kurt Hummel in the popular television show Glee. He also wrote and starred in Struck By Lightning, a coming of age comedy directed by Brian Dannelly. Colfer has also written multiple books: The Land of Stories and The Wishing Spell. This project will be Colfer’s first animated role, although he did voice a dog in 2010’s Marmaduke.
Colfer publicly expressed his excitement for the project, saying, “The kid in me is barely being contained right now – I’m so happy to get the chance to work on my first animated film.” Colfer will be voicing an energetic, overzealous robotic dog. Marza Animation’s CEO Masanao Maeda was also very excited for Colfer to work on the project. “We are absolutely ecstatic that Chris has chosen Robodog as his first foray into animation. Coupled with Ron’s extraordinary voiceover work, the duo’s talent will make for great chemistry onscreen.”
Perlman is known for his roles in the television dramas Beauty and the Beast and Sons of Anarchy, but perhaps most recognizable as comic book character Hellboy in the Hellboy films. He will be channelling that personality, perhaps, as he voices a stubborn real dog set in his proverbial old ways, with little patience for (presumably) Colfer’s upstart enthusiasm.
Marza Animation Planet is a subsidiary of the same corporation that holds famous Japanese game-maker SEGA (known for Sonic the Hedgehog series). Last year, they worked on the animated 3D epic Space Pirate Captain Harlock for Toei Animation.
Paul Wang and Robert Reece will be producing Robodog. William Schneider wrote the story. Robodog is currently in pre-production and the voiceover work will start on February 1.
