The classic Hans Christian Andersen story The Little Mermaid is being retold in live-action form with Chloe Grace Moretz (Carrie) signing on to play the title character of Ariel. Working Title and Universal are the studios behind the film.
As the project is currently still in development, little is known about how this version will compare to previous adaptations of the tale. However, writer Richard Curtis (Love Actually) is currently involved in negotiations that would have him penning the script.
Sofia Coppola (The Bling Ring) was originally attached to direct the project, but left earlier this year after creative differences with the studio. Reportedly, Coppola felt that Moretz was too big of a star to lead the film, but since the director is now out of the picture, the studio is pushing forward with the 18-year-old actress.
Moretz can be seen in several films next year, including Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising and November Criminals.
