More news about the upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot has recently come out as production approaches. The film has gained two new cast members, Chris Han and Hiroyuki Sanada, adding to the movie’s already impressive roster.
Singaporean actor Chin Han has been cast as Shang Tsung, a cunning soul stealing shapeshifting sorcerer. Shang Tsung debuted in the very first Mortal Kombat video game as a boss. In the Mortal Kombat video games Shang Tsungis is the right hand man of the series main villain Shao Kahn, and he is also considered the archenemy of the character Liu Kang. In the original Mortal Kombat movie Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa played Shang Tsung.
The fan favorite character Scorpion will be played by Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada. Along with Sub-Zero, Scorpion is usually considered to be the most popular character or even the mascot of the Mortal Kombat franchise. He can often be recognized by his memorable catch phrase “Get over here!” In the game series Scorpion is ninja who was killed (by Sub-Zero), but he came back to life as a specter intent on avenging his own death. Actor Chris Casamassa originally played Scorpion in the 1995 Mortal Kombat movie.
Both Han and Sanada have a lot of experience in action movies. Han has been in many different action movies over the years including The Dark Knight, 2012, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and the recent Dwayne Johnson movie Skyscraper. And Sanada’s resume is equally impressive. The actor has worked on several action movies including 47 Ronin, Avengers: Endgame, Rush Hour 3, Wolverine, and The Last Samurai. Some impressive fight scenes may be to come if the actor’s resumes are anything to go by.
Mortal Kombat is set for release in March of 2021.
