Studio Canal UK has released a new teaser trailer for Kill Your Friends, a comedic thriller set in the cutthroat world of the British music industry of the 90’s. Based on the novel by John Niven (Cat Run), who also wrote the script, the movie follows Stelfox (Nicholas Hoult, Mad Max: Fury Road), the young record executive who will go to criminal lengths to find the next pop hit.
The trailer is very reminiscent of movies like Trainspotting and Snatch with it’s kinetic energy and voiceover narration from an anti-hero protagonist. The film is the directorial debut for Owen Harris (TV’s Black Mirror) whose only other notable credits include the Showtime series Secret Diary of a Call Girl and the TV movie Holy Flying Circus that examined the backlash from religious groups over the Monty Python movie The Life of Brian.
The film will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival next week. It could be the start of big career jump for Hoult who was just cast as famous writer J.D. Salinger in the biopic Rebel in the Rye. He’s also starring in the thriller Collide and with Kristen Stewart in Equals which will premiere this weekend at the Venice Film Festival, and will return to play Hank McCoy/Beast in X-Men: Apocalypse one last time.
Kill Your Friends already has a distributor in Well Go USA Entertainment and they will likely gauge reception in Toronto to determine how much they’ll invest in U.S. Distribution. Given the already full release slate for the fall, it wouldn’t be surprising if it didn’t reach the states until sometime next year. In the meantime, you can watch the trailer below.
