Ice Cube (22 Jump Street) and Cedric the Entertainer (Top Five) reunite in Barbershop: The Next Cut, the third installment featuring the same crew of Calvin’s Barbershop.
Confirmed to be returning are Eve (Whip It) and Anthony Anderson (TV’s Black-ish), while Sean Patrick Thomas (The Murder Pact), Jazsmin Lewis (Four Seasons), Troy Garity (Sabotage) and DeRay Davis (My Favorite Five) are rumored to re-up. The produces from the first two films will also be returning – Robert Teitel, George L. Tillman and Ice Cube.
Barbershop premiered in 2002, followed by Barbershop 2: Back in Business two years later. Both movies performed solidly at the box office: the first film brought in $77 million on a $12 million budget while the second made $65 million on a $30 million budget.
In this latest iteration, Calvin (Ice Cube) and his male barbershop crew have gone co-ed; for financial reasons they have joined forces with another salon. Unfortunately, their Southside-of-Chicago neighborhood has taken a turn for the worse, and Calvin and crew develop a broader mission to save their shop and their surrounding community.
Malcolm D. Lee (The Best Man Holiday) directs from a screenplay by Kenya Barris (creator of TV’s Black-ish) and Tracy Oliver (TV’s Survivor’s Remorse), based on characters created by Mark Brown, who wrote the story for the first Barbershop. Lee, Becki Cross Trujillo, Ronald G. Muhammed and Jeff Kwatinetz will executive produce.
From Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures and Cube Vision, Barbershop: The Next Cut will be distributed by New Line Cinema. The film will be released nationwide on April 15.
