Check Out the Trailer for Alex Garland’s Sci-Fi ‘Ex Machina’

A24 has released the trailer for Alex Garland’s Ex Machina. Coming after A24 acquired the rights for Garland’s sci-fi thriller, the trailer stars Oscar Isaac (A Most Violent Year), Domhnall Gleeson (Frank), and Alicia Vikander (The Fifth Estate).

After a young programmer wins a competition and is selected to visit the private estate of a hermit-like CEO, he learns that he’s been picked to partake in a Turing Test where he’s to evaluate the habits, abilities and behavior of an A.I. named Ava. The programmer soon learns, however, that Ava is as complex, sensual, and manipulating as anybody could have predicted.

The striking, and perhaps most surprising thing about the trailer is the assured and deliberate visual look, quite impressive for a director making his film debut. What shouldn’t be shocking, though, is the intriguing and thought-provoking premise. Garland – who also wrote Ex Machina – is a writer well versed in science fiction whom has also written two novels that have been adapted into films (2000’s The Beach and 2003’s The Tesseract).

Ex Machina’s title derives from the famous Latin phrase “Deus ex machina” which translates to “god from the machine.” The film looks explore the popular phrase’s theme that comes with playing god and the possible dangers and repercussions that result in acting as a powerful creator.
