Fox Searchlight has released the red-band trailer for Wilson, new feature film starring Woody Harrelson as the titular character, a misanthrope who gains a sense of purpose with the discovery that he fathered a child. The film is based on the graphic novel written by Daniel Clowes (who also penned the script); Clowes previously adapted his acclaimed graphic novel Ghost World for the big screen in the 2001 comedy directed by Terry Zwigoff, he earned an Oscar nomination.
Directed by Craig Johnson (The Skeleton Twins), Wilson offers a character study inside the psyche of lonely, straight-shooting man who after discovering he has a daughter (Isabella Amara), hitches a plan to reunite with his estranged wife (Laura Dern) and seek familial connection. Cheryl Hines (Curb Your Enthusiasm) and Judy Greer (Grandma) also star. The movie, which has Fox Searchlight has been committed too for while now originally looked like a property that Oscar winner Alexander Payne (Sideways) was going to direct. It fell to Johnson, who in 2014 made a splash at Sundance and the specialty box office with The Skeleton Twins, another caustic dysfunctional family film which starred Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig.
The headlining role for Harrelson may cause a splash, especially considering next year looks to be a strong one for the 2-time Oscar nominated actor. Aside from Wilson, is slated to appear in the expected blockbuster War of the Planet of the Apes, Rob Reiner’s Shock and Awe, The Glass House opposite Oscar winner Brie Larson and Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. The next appears in The Edge of Seventeen starring Hailee Steinfeld.
