A24 has released a new poster and trailer for the documentary Amy, which tells the true story behind the rise and tragic fall of singer/songwriter Amy Winehouse, who passed away due to alcohol intoxication in 2011.
Throughout her life and career Winehouse battled drug and alcohol addiction. The Grammy-winning artist released two albums; a third album with unreleased songs and demos came out after her death. A24 released a teaser for the doc earlier this spring.
Asif Kapadia (Senna) directed the documentary, which is his first full-length film since the critically-acclaimed documentary about F1 driver Ayrton Senna, who also met an untimely death. Kapadia also has a drama set to be released this year, Ali and Nino.
Amy recently premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where it was met with critical acclaim as well as controversy, most notably from Winehouse’s fiancé at time of her death, Reg Traviss. Traviss criticized the movie, calling it “nothing more than a piece of orchestrated spin.”
The doc will be released in the U.S. and U.K. July 3. In the meantime, you can check out the new trailer below.
