It has arrived, Internet. Today saw the release of the long-awaited first trailer for the remake of the beloved cult classic Point Break (1991). The new film stars Luke Bracey and Edgar Ramirez – taking the place of Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze, respectively – in the timeless tale of an athlete (Bracey) recruited by the FBI to infiltrate a criminal ring that excels in extreme sports to pull off their daring heists.
The one thing made immediately clear from this trailer is that if there is anything funny or absurd about a remake of Point Break – and let’s be honest, there is – the filmmakers behind this version aren’t in on the joke. The director is Ericson Core – a cinematographer making his second directorial effort after his 2006 debut Invincible – working off a script from Kurt Wimmer (2012’s Total Recall remake, Street Kings). Rather than focusing on surfing, Ericson and Wimmer have widened the canvas to include “extreme athletes,” who, from the look of it, do a lot of jumping from very high places. Their goal, rather than just robbing banks to fund their search of an endless summer, is to “use their skills” to “disrupt the international financial markets” – whatever that means.
If you managed to avoid blinking, you may have caught a glimpse of Australian actress Teresa Palmer in the role once filled by Lori Petty, and Ray Winstone in the part originally played by Gary Busey. The movie is set to hit theaters this Christmas.
