After premiering at this year’s Sundance Film Festival – to mostly positive reviews – God Help the Girl has its first trailer out. The film marks the directorial debut of Stuart Murdoch (also the screenwriter), frontman of the Scottish indie pop band, Belle & Sebastian. Understandably, the romantic comedy drama is also a musical. In fact, God Help the Girl began as a music project for Murdoch – which consisted of Belle & Sebastian serving as the back-up band for various female singers.
The project resulted in several albums, and of course the film, which based thematically on the songs produced by the band – themes that included love, loss, spontaneity, and the desire to create.
Eve (Emily Browning) is a catastrophe—low on self-esteem but high on fantasy, especially when it comes to music. Over the course of one Glasgow summer, she meets two similarly rootless souls: posh Cass (Hannah Murray) and fastidious James (Olly Alexander), and together they decide there’s only one thing to do: form a pop group.
If you enjoy the light jangly sound of Belle & Sebastian or similar groups, or if you just enjoy musical movies (especially ones like Once and Begin Again), God Help the Girl may be worth seeing, and hearing when it comes to theaters September 5th.
