It certainly looks as though Denis Villeneuve has made another beautifully crafted sci-fi film, and may soon be synonymous with a new age of science fiction films. In his follow-up to last year’s Oscar-winning Arrival, Villeneuve and Warner Bros has released a new teaser trailer for the upcoming film Blade Runner 2049. The fifteen second spot teases what we can expect from the full trailer on Monday. We can hear Robin Wright’s voice, and see more intensely pigmented shots of Ryan Gosling. Wright can be heard saying, “There’s an order to things — that’s what we do here.” The cast also includes Jared Leto, Harrison Ford, and Dave Bautista.
The brilliant colors are credit to Villeneuve’s vision, but also renowned cinematographer Roger Deakins, who has been nominated for 13 Oscars, but has yet to claim one. Those films include The Shawshank Redemption, Fargo, O Brother Where Art Thou?, No Country for Old Men, True Grit, Skyfall, Unbroken, and Sicario.
The screenplay for this reboot was written by Hampton Fancher, the writer of the original Blade Runner, and Michael Green. Green is the creator of Starz upcoming series American Gods, and has previously wrote the screenplay for Logan, which has received strong reviews this year. This film takes place thirty years after the events of the first film, with a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Gosling). The Blade Runner series is based off of the book by Philip K. Dick, whose work has inspired films such as Total Recall and Minority Report, as well as the Amazon series Man in the High Castle.
Warner Bros is handling domestic distribution, while Sony is handling the majority of international distribution. Alcon Entertainment, 16:14 Entertainment, Scott Free Productions, Thunderbird Entertainment, Torridon Films, and Columbia Pictures are all producing the project, along with Warner Bros.
