In The Lovers, Tracy Letts and Debra Winger play a longtime married couple, each carrying on with long term affairs and appear headed towards splitsville. That is until, surprisingly to both of them, they rekindle the passion in their long dormant relationship. So is the premise for Azazel Jacobs’ mature romantic dramedy. The first trailer has arrived for the forthcoming art-house title.
Arriving in theaters this spring, The Lovers on the outset looks like it may very well become a sleeper on the art-house circuit akin to recent indie comedies like Hello, My Name is Doris, I’ll See You in My Dreams and Grandma – that is quiet small scaled films that arrive with little fanfare that find success within older demographics. Jacobs writes and directs the film, his first the 2011 indie dramedy Terri, which starred John C. Rielly. Letts and Winger provide the focal points while Aidan Gillen (The Wire) and Melora Walters (Short Term 12) portray their jilted lovers.
Letts, the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winning playwright of August: Osage County (which he adapted into the Oscar nominated 2013 film that starred Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts), recently appeared in the indies Christine and Indignation and also has recurring role on the similarly themed HBO dramedy Divorce. He also appears on film later this in Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut Lady Bird starring Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn). Winger, a three-time Oscar nominated actress, most recently was seen in the Netflix comedy The Ranch.
